HONG KONG. Lita Cabellut “Behind the Curtains” Opera Gallery

Mar 7, 2013 - Mar 30, 2013

Featuring large-scale portraits of endearing characters like Coco Chanel, Charlie Chaplin, and Marlene Dietrich, Cabellut's paintings are filled with intimacy. Striking in their size and scale, they transgress a deep and powerful visual experience that carries the discipline of Vermeer and yet the sincerity of Francis Bacon. Her subjects derive from her ongoing dialogue with her canvas, stating: "I am more than a painter, I am a story teller." The Spanish Lita Cabellut was born on 1961 in Barcelona  Cabellut’s life story is one of triumph from poverty and misery as a street child in Barcelona to great achievement and success in the art world, peaking with major Museum exhibitions scheduled throughout 2013. (Opera gallery Press release)

"I am reminded of great poetry when I look at the paintings of Lita Cabellut. She is searching for subjects that have a special character, that in a sense represent all of humanity. She wants to delve into the soul of humanity, to represent all people as having common ground, to show that we are all somehow connected to one another. Thus, we are seeing the figure through her eyes, but we are also experiencing the figure eyes regarding us. Through this approach of seeing, we begin to come to terms with the power of a figurative art that expresses more than the fashionable exterior and gives us instead a view from the interior looking outwards. When we look at the paintings of Lita Cabellut, we experience ourselves" (A Voyage through the eyes of the figure:
